It is not easy to love a city that initially ignores you and later threatens to fall on you. But do I have to love it in order to write about it? I thought about it for a long time and came to the conclusion: no. From the moment I gave up the obligation to love Tokyo, I began to take an interest in the city's affairs. Over time, my modest interest grew into sympathy and then into a gentle affection. I still considered myself a big dreamer, but even in my wildest fantasies I never imagined that the project "Japanese Boy for a Year" undertaken as a daring joke would end with me marrying into a samurai family. The line between dreams and reality is invisible. When does fantasy become reality, a stranger become your own, a distant culture become home? At what point does a child become an adult? It is difficult to notice when I crossed these boundaries, or whether I did.
