I must admit that I adapted surprisingly easily to the conditions of cage life. As for the material side of things, I really enjoyed the joys of paradise: during the day the monkeys fulfilled my smallest wishes, at night I shared the place of one of the most beautiful girls in the room. I got used to this way of life to such an extent that for a whole month I did not make any serious attempts to end it, I even stopped perceiving its uniqueness and humiliating aspects. I barely learned a few monkey words, nothing more. I gave up trying to make contact with Zira, so that if at first she was instinctively inclined to see me as a rational being, she now had to agree with Zaius's claims and perceive me as a human of her planet, that is, as an animal, but in any case not as a rational being.
Pierre Boulle (born 1912) is a French writer, whose works the Estonian reader is primarily familiar with the war novel "The Bridge over the River Kwai" (1952), which brought the author literary fame.
