Interest in the supernatural and mystical was widespread during the time of Charles Dickens (1812-1870). The writer himself always loved good folk ghost stories, in which evil spirits, spirits that rode ancient stagecoaches at night, unearthly counterparts of humans, incarnations of despair and evil, but also forces that gave comfort and solace, were usually told especially at Christmas.
In the performance of Dickens, the old storyteller, these are at times humorous, pleasant, gothic grotesque tales, which sometimes do not lack the instructive irony typical of the era.
This collection includes the ghost stories "The Strange Chair", "The Spirits of the Stagecoaches", "The Manuscript of the Madman", "How the Evil Ones Stole the Bellman" and others, which were published at different times in several magazines and as books, as well as one of Dickens' famous Christmas stories "The Bewitched Man and the Pact with the Spirit".
