Belbin’s management theory offers guidance both for managers looking to recruit the right employees and for individuals seeking a suitable job. Belbin’s principles are widely recognized globally and have long been applied in Estonia as well.
An ideal team includes individuals who fulfill all the key roles. According to Belbin, these roles are categorized as follows: thinking-oriented roles (Innovator, Evaluator, Specialist), action-oriented roles (Shaper, Implementer, Completer-Finisher), and people-oriented roles (Coordinator, Resource Investigator, Teamworker). Problems arise when this balance is lost and a team consists of only one type of employee. Innovators and Shapers need others to bring their proposed ideas to life. Conversely, Implementers and Completer-Finishers, if left to their own devices, often become stuck in established, habitual ways of doing things.
The book provides an excellent exploration of the topic of difficult conversations. While some individuals may be perceived as "difficult" by certain people, others manage to work with them quite effectively, thanks to a greater capacity to adapt their own behavior to suit others. Nevertheless, every organization contains individuals who are genuinely challenging to deal with—employees who become a burden to both clients and colleagues.
Ensuring the right person is placed in the right role from the very start is a far better solution than having to resolve complex personnel crises later on. The book has been written by a number of authors who follow Belbin’s principles of teamwork.
