"Between Three Plagues" depicts the life of Balthasar Russow, an Estonian pastor from Tallinn, the author of the Livonian Chronicle, who lived in the 16th century, and the medieval urban environment that surrounded him. The theme that runs through the work is what compromises must be made in order not to abandon one's principles and morality under foreign rule.
The main problem of the novel is Russow's position between two social, cultural and national worlds - the German nobility and the Estonian underclass. He fights to become an upper class, defying circumstances, but remains spiritually connected to the rural people. Therefore, he has to constantly maneuver and make compromises.
