Every summer, Elina Ylijaakko travels to her hometown in Eastern Lapland to catch a pike from a muddy pond. She has to catch the fish within three days, otherwise something terrible will happen. This time, however, misfortune strikes her - a eel appears from the pond and decides to take the pike and the entire body of water under its protection. As if that were not enough, the woman is pursued by policeman Janatuinen, who suspects her of murder.
For Elina, as a local, the mythical creatures that have returned to Lapland are nothing to be surprised about, but Janatuinen finds himself in strange situations again and again. He too has to go on a fishing trip, and on this journey he meets an old evil, a troll and many other colorful characters.
“The Little Pike Catch” is a linguistically virtuoso novel, at once a love drama and a mythical fantasy, a folk comedy and a ruthless criticism of a lifestyle that contributes to the destruction of our environment.
Juhani Karila's humor can be compared to that of our Andrus Kivirähki.
Juhani Karila (b. 1985) is from the village of Kairala in Eastern Lapland. After graduating from the University of Tampere, he worked as a journalist. Karila entered the literary world with the short story collections "Gorilla" (2013) and "Death of the Apple Crocodile" (2016). "Fishing for a Small Pike", published in 2019, is his first novel, and it won the Kalevi Jäntti Prize that same year and the Jarkko Laine Prize in 2020.
