Mait Metsanurka's "On the Round River" is certainly one of the best-known and most beloved historical novels among Estonian classics. The central plot is the victorious battle of the Estonian army on the Round River in 1210. The novel also provides a fictional picture of the entire ancient struggle for freedom. Thus, it is undoubtedly one of the most important works dealing with the tenacious resistance of Estonians to the Crusaders.
Critics and literary scholars have highlighted the writer's ability to depict the circumstances of the ancient struggle for freedom without excessive romanticism and heroism in "On the Round River". The description of the Battle of the Round River – a successful ambush attack by a detachment of Estonians against the Order of the Sword Brothers and the Bishop of Riga and the Livonians and Latgalians who had joined them – is probably familiar to all Estonians. Thus, a small ancient victory has become a great mental symbol that will last through time.
This volume is based on the novel's 1935 edition. edition.
