Giraffe Neck - Judith Schalansky

Adaptation is crucial, Inge Lohmark knows. After all, she has been teaching biology for over thirty years. The fact that the school will close in four years is inevitable – there are not enough children in the fading provincial town on the outskirts of Western Pomerania. The biology teacher sets out to fight for the laws of nature, reaches for unattainable fruits and finally renounces her faith in Darwin. The whole story takes place in one of the craziest institutions in the world: school. Judith Schalansky was born in Greifswald in 1980, studied art history and communication design. Her literary debut, the sailor novel “Blau steht dir nicht” (“Blue does not suit you”), was published in 2008. In 2010, she received the 1st prize from the Book Art Foundation for her book “Atlas der ablegenen Inseln” (“Atlas of the Outlying Islands”). She lives in Berlin as a freelance writer.
