This book is for married people who have discovered how much the daily grind of marriage puts it to the test—and who are seeking practical tools to help their marriage endure trials that sometimes seem insurmountable, and to grow through them.
“There is no relationship between human beings more significant than marriage. In the biblical narrative, God Himself officiates the first wedding (Genesis 2:22–25). And when the man sees the woman, he becomes poetic and exclaims: ‘At last!’[i] Everything in this text proclaims that, apart from our relationship with God, marriage is the deepest relationship that exists. And for this reason, getting to know and loving one’s spouse—much like coming to know God Himself—is difficult and painful, yet also deeply rewarding and wonderful.
The most arduous, the most wonderful—such is the biblical understanding of marriage; and there has never been a more important time in our culture to highlight this.”
Tim Keller
[i] Chapter One – “The Mystery of Marriage”
When Adam sees Eve, his speech becomes poetic. This is a truly extraordinary shift, intended to signal the significance of the event and the power of Adam’s profound, inner response to Eve. His first words are difficult to translate. Literally, he says: “This—this time!” The New International Version renders this simply with the word "now," but the New Revised Version has handled it better, translating: "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh!"
