Einar Sanden (born 1932) is a well-known and meritorious Estonian writer abroad, who has published several popular novels on the subjects of Estonia's recent history. His autobiographical novel series «Hommikutunnid», planned as five volumes, brings to life the adventures of the author's youth in Estonia during the German occupation, his escape to Germany, life in a DP camp, his transfer to England and becoming a ship's boy on a ship sailing under the Panamanian flag. The novel "Faces and Masks". Hommikutundind II» narrates the adventures of the character I when escaping from Estonia and the first years of his life in Germany. The work is made especially exciting and valuable by the personal memories of contacts with several Estonian rulers and fellow runners during the German occupation (from Alfred Rosenberg and Karl Litzmann to Hjalmar Mäe and Juhan Libeni). As a revivalist of the past, Sanden is very skilled, and his novel, written in a humorous vein, is read with excitement until the last page.
