Vincent Schiavelli: Many Beautiful Things. Stories and Recipes from Polizzi Generosa.
Vincent Schiavelli is best known as a character actor. He has appeared in films such as ''One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'', ''Amadeus'' and ''The Secret Life of Pets''.
Schiavelli grew up in Brooklyn, in a Sicilian-American family where both English and Sicilian were spoken. His earliest memories include evenings in his grandparents' kitchen, his grandfather and grandmother telling him stories about life and the people they left behind in their hometown of Polizzi Generosa, a small town in the Madonie mountains of Sicily.
As Schiavelli grew older, the stories about the town became a kind of fairy tale. When he was almost forty, he took his first trip to Sicily, and a fairy tale awaited him, beginning with the phrase "Once upon a time..." - stories he had heard so many times in his grandparents' kitchen.
In "Many Beautiful Things", Schiavelli invites the reader to discover the people, nature and, most importantly, the local cuisine of Polizzi Generosa. He has written a wonderful, enjoyable book that can be considered both a memoir and a cookbook. The recipes are simple and down-to-earth, and include sweet and sour meatballs, summer minestrone, tomato risotto, braised lamb and potato gratin with bay leaves, as well as several desserts and excellent liqueurs (including limuncello).
Anyone dreaming of a trip to Sicily will find many good tips on places to stay and places to eat... The book is illustrated with drawings by Vincent's friend, the Polizzi artist Santo Lipani.
Once the reader has finished the book, he will no longer wonder why Vincent Schiavelli has become a second home, next to the luxurious Hollywood, in Polizzi Generosa.
He has contributed to many publications, publishing articles on Sicilian cuisine. In the film world, he has gained fame as a great character actor. He has participated in more than a hundred films and television series.
In his free time from acting, he mainly works in his kitchen. He has published several cookbooks, the first of which, ''Papa Andrea's Sicilian Cuisine'' won the Columbus Citizens Foundation Literary Award. His second cookbook is entitled ''Bruculinu, America''.
Vincent was invited to be a guest chef at cooking schools across the country and appeared on many cooking shows. He was the host and co-producer of the series ''La Bella Vita'', where he introduced food, wine and the good life. The first four episodes of the series were filmed in Polizzi Generosa.
Vincent Schiavelli died on December 26, 2005.
