The Vändra hamlet, located in the northeastern part of the Pärnu district, together with the territory of the village council of the same name, is the main area of the former Vändra parish. The cultural and historical importance of this area and the scope of economic life are discussed on these pages.

The name Vändra has been popularized by the song Vändra metsas Pärnu County. Inspired by this song, the students of the Vändra secondary school at the time created the text Suured metsad ja karulaaned for the music of the Vändra polka in 1936. The bear theme appears in folk songs, legends and folk tales collected from Vändra. Today, the bear has become the symbol of Vändra. The image of the bear appears on the emblems of Vändra secondary school and many institutions, is a prize for the winners of the Vändra marathon, go-karting and some other competitions, and decorates the ornamental gardens of houses. The largest of the many statues is located in the Vändra secondary school park.
