The book is based on the Faroese legend "Beinta and Peder Arrheboe", which is based on historical facts. However, the writer has processed the legend according to his own mood, and his fateful wife Barbara does not have the evil or malice of the legendary Beinta.
"This is a book about life and youth, a story characterized by cunning and charm, humor and poetry, but which is also not without grains of irony and an undercurrent of sadness." (William Heinesen)
