Sandor Marai is an outstanding Hungarian writer, whom the rest of the world has only recently begun to rediscover. The bulk of his work dates back to the 1930s. After World War II, the communists who came to power in Hungary began to persecute him, and in 1948 he left Hungary. In the 1990s, already after the author's death, his works were discovered by a well-known Italian writer and publisher, and thanks to his activities, they have been translated into many languages and have become international bestsellers.
