The rules for writing numbers in Estonian have remained largely the same over the past hundred years: ordinal numbers are indicated with Roman numerals without a dot and Arabic numerals with a dot, cardinal numbers are indicated with Arabic numerals without a dot: short numerals are recommended to be written as words, longer ones as numerals; if necessary, it is allowed to add an inflectional ending to the numeral, but not the stem vowel. However, most textbooks and grammars have dealt with number writing quite briefly and superficially.
This brochure summarizes and compiles the newer rules and recommendations, adding brief overviews of the history of the formation of Estonian number writing rules for comparison, as well as some general educational sections on the history of number writing
