«Lolita» tells the story of the all-encompassing and irresistible passion that the main character, a middle-aged literature professor Humbert, feels for a 12-year-old girl, Lolita. After the first meeting, the girl becomes the man's object of desire and soon his stepdaughter. After the death of the girl's mother, a man and his little nymph embark on a journey by car, which can only end dramatically. The work, which was banned in several countries due to its content, including the writer's native Russia, has been translated into many languages. The book has also been selected as one of the hundred best English-language books of the 20th century.
Undoubtedly, the most notorious novel by the writer Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977), who emigrated from Russia, «Lolita» was published in 1955 after repeated rejections by publishers.
Vladimir Nabokov is considered a writer with a brilliant imagination, whose keywords are erudition, intriguing situations and extraordinary ingenuity.
Based on the work, a film of the same name has been made twice, directed by Stanley Kubrick (1962) and Adrian Lyne (1997).
