Summer 1940. In the spring, Finland has signed a peace treaty with the Soviet Union and the Winter War is behind us. The Estonian state has offered various forms of support and assistance to Finns who have suffered in the war. Finnish home daughters, or little lottas, arrive at the Estonian home daughters' Rannamõisa holiday home to recover from the shocks of the war. In the middle of their vacation, Estonia is occupied. Finnish girls Laila and Annika become witnesses to this. Estonia is soon facing deportation and terror, which also affects the Estonian women's home defenders. The leaders of the women's organization share the fate of the Estonian officers; soon after the occupation comes into force, they are executed. On the other side of the bay, the Finnish Lotta organization Lotta Svärd is also banned, its own country labeling it fascist at the insistence of the Soviet Union. The door between the two countries is closing.
This deeply human work tells the story of the fate of Finland and Estonia, which are more similar than different, and of the cooperation of European women's organizations in the name of preventing wars. The lives and history of ordinary people in two small countries run side by side with the depressing twists and turns of power politics in the great powers.
Writer and director Imbi Paju does not use the language of historians, but writes as a journalist and essayist. «Sisters of the Gulf of Finland» is a psychohistorical work that gives voice to the silence created during the Cold War and also draws attention to how the impact of past events is passed on to future generations.
