The book focuses most on medieval churches, because they form the most precious part of our architectural heritage. Of course, our churches are more modest than the Gothic cathedrals of France. We are still located on the outskirts of Europe. Despite this, we also have things that can complement the architectural picture of the Old World and that are no longer seen anywhere else. Like Tartu's St. John's Church, whose terracotta decoration has no equal. Also Padise Monastery, which is an absolute exception among the extremely rich and fascinating architectural heritage of the Cistercians. One of the most difficult tasks in making this book was the selection of churches. What to take, what to leave. Of course, the top works have been preferred above all. At the same time, an attempt has been made to provide a mosaic-like cross-section of our sacred buildings, among which there are both the efforts of the Western Isles and the efforts typical of the province. One can only hope that by discovering Estonian sanctuaries, many secrets of past culture will be revealed to the reader. Kaur Alttoa, author of the book
