Ex-Marine Malcolm Bannister was working in a small-town Virginia law firm until a seemingly innocent real estate deal turned his life upside down. Namely, the hunting lodge where a Capitol employee held orgies with congressmen and underage girls was sold. When the scandal broke out, Bannister was caught between the cogs of a machine much more powerful than him and was innocently sentenced to ten years in prison. The novel begins five years later, when Bannister has already served half of his sentence. She has lost everything: her job, her husband, her family. But when a federal judge and his lover are suddenly brutally murdered and the FBI's investigation goes nowhere, Bannister sees his chance. Namely, Bannister knows who killed them and why, and what the judge kept in his safe. But he agrees to help the FBI only in exchange for his release.
