Jeanette is a sharp and rebellious orphan who grows up in a deeply religious family in the industrial area of Northern England. At school she embroiders gloomy religious mottos, at weekends she plays the tambourine in praise of the Lord and converts passers-by to the faith. Little Jeanette's life is intertwined with her mother's strange views on life and books, and so she grows up to be a very peculiar girl.
When Jeanette reaches adolescence, falls in love for the first time and discovers her sexuality, the balance in the godly home quickly collapses. Jeanette's determination to listen to the voice of her heart and proclaim it to the world makes this an unforgettable, moving and unique coming-of-age story.
About the author:
Jeanette Winterson was adopted into a Pentecostal family, where she was raised to be a missionary. When Winterson was faced with the choice of leaving home or the girl he was in love with, he chose love and lived there for a while, including in his little Mini, at the age of 16. He graduated from Oxford University and his debut novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, was published when he was 25 (1985). In 1990, the novel was also turned into an award-winning short story series of the same name. Jeanette Winterson has now published 13 novels, several collections of short stories, children's books and a biography, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? She is a professor of creative writing at the University of Manchester and believes that art belongs to everyone
