Valev Uibopuu’s novel was published in exile in 1948—just a few years after the end of the Second World War. The setting of the work is clearly defined: it describes events that took place in a small Estonian town between 1939 and 1941. Although the town is not named in the novel, the reader quickly realizes that the model for this small border town can only be Valga. It was precisely there that Uibopuu had lived and worked as a journalist in the late 1930s. On every page of the novel, it is evident that the author is well-acquainted with the environment and character archetypes of such a small town, and that he possesses the sensitivity to portray them effectively.
