Mart Sander's novel "Litsid" sheds light on the pivotal years of Estonia's fate. The book tells the story of the period 1939–1944 through the eyes of a small Tallinn brothel and the people who visit it. In such a closed microcosm, groundbreaking events and moments are often reflected only as distant echoes of reality, breaking painfully into an illusory world one by one. Many young women have fled to such a world, all of whom have different reasons for abandoning ordinary life and their own identity. But they too have to fight. The first part of the novel cycle takes place in 1939–1940, when Estonia, unnoticed by itself, set out on the path to the destruction of its independence.
