Helmi Eller (1902–1998) is a literary critic, translator and author of monographs, in the same league as female authors who have already appeared in Estonian Thought, such as Johanna Sild-Rebane, Marta Sillaots, Mall Jürma and Marju Lepajõe. As a linguist and teacher, Helmi Eller herself did not write novels or poetry, but she did translate five volumes of memoirs by Aino Kaldalt, and among male authors she chose William Faulkner and Vöinö Linna to translate. She has written short monographs on Arvo Mägi, Peeter Lindsaar and Ain Kalmus, and as a reviewer she preferred to discuss prose works at length, becoming a leading literary critic in exile over the decades.
The publication of the book has been supported by the Ministry of Education and Research, the Estonian Cultural Endowment, the Estonian Cultural Association in Sweden and the Estonian Thought Foundation.
