Cult director David Cronenberg's debut novel is an intriguing story about two journalists, Naomi and Nathan, who are both lovers and rivals.
Naomi is immersed in researching the case of Célestine and Aristide Arosteguy, French philosophers and advocates of free sex. Célestine was found murdered and mutilated in her Paris apartment. Aristide, who is accused of killing his wife and eating her body parts, has disappeared. Based on the hints of the eccentric student Hervé Blomqvist, Naomi sets out to find a husband. The more Naomi investigates, the more she learns about the couple's strange sex life, which involved several other people.
At the same time, Nathan photographs the activities of Zoltán Molnár, a controversial and illegally practicing surgeon in Budapest. The surgeon was previously on Interpol's wanted list as a suspect in organ trafficking. After sleeping with one of Molnàr's patients, Nathan contracts a rare venereal disease called Roiphe. Nathan travels to Toronto to meet the man who discovered the disease.
Pretty soon, Naomi and Nathan become so deeply involved in the cases that their entire lives become a surreal journey into the twists and turns of global conspiracy theories.
