This publication tries to give an overview of the development history of one of the oldest independent non-university research institutes in Estonia - 1937. from the established Natural Resources Institute to the current Estonian Energy Institute. One of the reasons for that is the year 1997. the round number of years that the institute fills, on the other hand, the desire to capture the story of one institute as a concise retrospective, still largely using the so-called living sources. This rather long and eventful story forms one chapter of the history of the development of Estonian technical thought and technical sciences and related applied research, in which the Institute has largely played the not always appreciated role of a pioneer.
