When the armistice between France and England ended in 1803, an enraged Napoleon interned thousands of British tourists in France. Many were forced to hide to avoid arrest, including Sir Edward Waltham, who did not survive the winter. A year later, her daughter Vernita tried to support her mother with the precarious income she earned by making fine embroidered garments for Napoleon's sister, Her Imperial Highness Princess Pauline Borghese.

Vernita discovers that the shopkeepers are cheating her, and disguises herself as a French petty bourgeois to deliver the newly made negligees to the princess. From that moment on, she is embroiled in a complicated relationship with the princess's lover, Count Axel de Storvik, and with Emperor Napoleon himself.

Barbara Cartland, the world's best-known romance novelist, historian, playwright, lecturer, political commentator and television personality, has written over 700 books to date. Her works have sold over 650 million copies worldwide. Writing an average of twenty-three books a year, she is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's best-selling author.
