Does twice the income lead to twice the happiness? In a research study, Americans believed that if their income was $55,000 instead of $25,000, their life satisfaction would double. In fact, however, it turned out that those who earned $55,000 were only 9% more satisfied than those who earned $25,000. Across the world, income has surprisingly little effect on whether people smile and feel happy during the day, according to research. The authors of "Happy Money", psychologist Elizabeth Dunn and marketing guru Michael Norton, have found, based on research, how using money increases feelings of happiness. They find five ways to do this: buy experiences, make it a reward, buy time, sleep now and consume later, invest in others.
