International law of the sea, as a part of international law and one of the most important determinants of its development since its early years, which although only applies to about 71% of the globe, contains the necessary knowledge for all users of the seas and its natural resources. Modern Code of the Seas -- UN 1982. the Convention on the Law of the Sea, together with the related international agreements, to which this book is mainly devoted to analysis, divides the Earth's international sea into several sea areas with different legal status and regimes, or the seabed with the earth's crust below it, either as the continental shelf of the coastal state or as a shared deep sea reserve. Only by correctly orienting themselves in all these nuances can sea users know exactly their rights and obligations, the rights of other persons or countries in relation to them, and the possible means and forums for protecting their rights. This book is unique in Estonian legal literature, offering the reader a qualified translation of many important articles of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and terminology, the acceptance of which depends on you all. The book and its information-rich appendices should be of interest not only to all lawyers, authorities of the Republic of Estonia related to maritime or foreign relations, those involved in the shipping business or those related to it, but to each of us who in some way wish to penetrate the sea and its resources. Heiki Lindpere is the director of the Institute of Law of the University of Tartu and an extraordinary professor in the chair of maritime law, whose twenty years of research and teaching of international law is being complemented by a specialization in maritime law, which is justified both by his educational path and career, as well as the need to have well-developed knowledge and native language skills in this important area of ​​law. By the time the book is published, the author has been invited to work for a year as a researcher at the Institute of Scandinavian Commercial Maritime Law at the University of Oslo, which should be followed by the writing of a book in Estonian on commercial maritime law for participants in the shipping business or those interested in it.
