The work of the English writer Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) belongs to the classics of science fiction. An exciting novel in the style of old horror stories aims to observe human nature; an important place is the ethical problem of the creator's responsibility towards his creation.
Every era has its ghost stories. even ghosts get old and go out of fashion. And most of the time, authors of horror novels do not stay in literature lock.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was more fortunate. Written in the spirit of gothic horror novels - "so that the reader would be afraid to look back, so that the blood would freeze in his veins", as the author notes in the preface - the work became something more: the author unknowingly laid the foundation for a new genre. "Frankenstein" managed to be the world's first published science fiction novel.
Mary Godwin was born on August 30, 1797 in London into a fairly well-known literary family. Father William Godwin's book written a few years earlier was a handbook for the radical wing of parliamentary reformers, and mother Mary Wollstonecraft had published A Vindication of the Rights of Women (1792), which made her the first prominent feminist.
