"Öökull Öösikes aabits" is intended for learning to read for 1st grade children with different levels of preparation. The texts are presented for weaker and stronger readers. Each letter starts with syllable word formation or short simple text for weaker readers and continues with text for stronger readers.

For better acquisition of reading technique, the texts are simple and suitable for children, the words are syllabified. The topic is age-appropriate and understandable for the child. The stories are about children and animals and the relationships between them. The owl, as a symbol of wisdom, helps the child to understand and reflect on important values with its questions. The topics of emotional education, behavior culture, moral standards, environmental protection and safety are in the first place.

The textbook is divided into four parts by groups of sounds. The learning of vowels, consonants and parentheses is supported by the color of the letter and the edge of the textbook. Group IV is made up of foreign stars. The image and word strip on the edges of the pages provides an additional opportunity for narration, pronunciation, familiarization with small print letters and integration with other subjects (mathematics, science, music, art...)

The text is supported by aesthetic experiences and pleasing pictures for the student, which help to understand the text, develop narration and pronunciation skills.
