The 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia will hopefully not make us forget that we will soon also be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the victory of the Estonian troops over the German Landeswehr. Perhaps it is precisely because of this that we can celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia at all – with this victory, Estonians finally straightened their backs, former losses and the humiliation of the manor stables were washed away. People fled to the war against the barons from other fronts and hospitals, and with these battles their country became permanently attached to the hearts of the people.
It is no wonder that so many Crosses of Liberty were awarded for the battles fought in this war, some of them unfortunately posthumously. I know from personal experience how difficult it can be to explain the meaning of this war to an ambassador of a European country – probably in the same way as the stubbornness of our ancestors, who in ancient times used to smash iron pots on the heads of cultural importers, shouting: “Sing, sing, cardboard!”
This book lets the men who participated in these battles speak – from privates to officers, from townspeople to deputies of the Constituent Assembly. Because each of them made their contribution to standing under the blue, black and white flag on Victory Day for the 100th time.
