The Estonian National Theater Institute was established in 1946, its first flight began at the Drama Studio, which previously operated in the Drama Theater premises. The theater school, created in the difficult post-war period, was forced to act at the height of the Stalinist repressions, several lecturers and some students were hit. The school was closed after the 8th plenum of the ECB in 1950, the III flight ended in 1951 already at the conservatory.
Priit Põldroos became the director of the school, Leo Kalmet, Kaarli Aluoja, Felix Moor, Helmi Tohvelman, Alber Üksip, Ants Lauter became teachers.
Three flights graduated from the theater institute, and the most famous graduates include Heikki Haravee, Jüri Järvet, Gunnar Kilgas, Einari Koppel, Leida Laius, Linda Rummo, Eino Baskin, Lembit Eelmäe, Kuno Süvalep and others.
The reminiscences of this book are largely based on the personal memories of theater historian and critic Maimu Valter and his schoolmates. M. Valter presents the events and positions through a colorful prism of memory, also reflecting the absurdist ideology and rhetoric of the Soviets with a clear eye and a passionate soul. (from the preface)
Maimu Valter's book is hereby published as a welcome and valuable addition to the Estonian Theater Schools series published by the Estonian Theater Association.
