On the history shelves in England, the USA, and Canada, a work covering Estonian history—*Estonia: A Modern History* (2018) by the Englishman Neil Taylor—stands proudly alongside histories of the world's major powers. Now, Estonians too have the opportunity to explore a fresh foreign perspective on our history.
Neil Taylor: "The last history of Estonia published in Great Britain was written by John Hampden Jackson. Its first edition appeared in 1941, and the second in 1948. In it, he wrote about the 'Russian occupation, the end of which no one can predict' and described in detail the difficult situation Estonians faced at the time. Jackson lived until 1966 but wrote nothing further about Estonia—perhaps because he felt there was nothing new to say, given how the Soviet system was attempting to establish itself there with increasing determination. Until 1960, foreigners had no opportunity to travel to Estonia, and even afterwards, they were rarely permitted to venture beyond Tallinn."
