"History of the Hanseatic League" is a comprehensive and richly illustrated insight into the Hanseatic League, the most important economic and political association in medieval Europe, whose ideas of free trade and cross-border cooperation were centuries ahead of their time. The book considers the Hanseatic League as an important part of European history, a future-oriented medieval economic organization, knowledge of which is indispensable for understanding the formation of Europe.
Among other things, the book introduces the member cities of the Hanseatic League (more than two hundred of them belonged to it at the height of the association) and the daily life of rich Hanseatic merchants (the richest of them even lent money to kings), the dominance of the German Hanseatic League, which had been achieved with the help of money and greed for profit, and Hanseatic shipping from experience to piracy. Some attention is paid to the role of the Hanseatic League in Livonia - now Estonia and Latvia - and its immediate surroundings, as well as to Estonian Hanseatic cities.
