Johann Wolfgang Goethe's epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther has no external plot. The events are narrated through Werther's letters to his brother Wilhelm.
The story begins with Werther moving to a fictitious village called Wahlheim. There, the young and emotional Werther is enchanted by both the beauty of the surrounding nature and the simple life of the peasants living there. At a party, Werther meets Lotte - a young and beautiful woman who, after the early death of his mother, is forced to take care of her younger siblings - and falls in love with her instantly. However, Lotte is already engaged, and so their relationship must remain a friendship.
