The main character of the novel, Pavel Nikolayevich Chichikov, is an enterprising character who moves among stagnant landowners and officials. A flexible and sneaky man, he also dreams of wealth and a warm place. The fortune hunter, dismissed from civil service for fraud, has a peculiar plan to get rich. He travels around Russia and buys “dead souls” from landowners – peasants who have already passed away but have not yet been officially written off from the revision list.
On February 24, 1852, the writer burned the notes for the second part of “Dead Souls”, threw himself into bed, refused to eat and died nine days later in pain.
