The Sound and the Fury (1929) was Faulkner's fourth novel, which achieved great success only two years after its first publication. The novel takes place in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County. The story is divided into four parts: the first part is the protagonist of the mentally disabled man Benjy Compson; the second part features his brother, the depressed student Quentin Compson; the third part is narrated by the third and extremely evil brother Jason Compson; the fourth and final part does not have the protagonist, but the focus is on the family's black servant Dilsey. In his legendary novel, the writer tells a rich but somewhat gloomy story of a traditional Mississippi family, each character of which appears before the reader as an extremely lively and true character.
William Harrison Faulkner (1897–1962) was born in Mississippi, America. He is considered one of America's best novelists. Faulkner is known primarily for his long and complex sentences and his embarrassingly precise manner of expression.
Faulkner has won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award (posthumously). In 1949, the writer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
