Carel is a non-existent clergyman at the City Church. He is survived by his daughter Muriel, his beautiful invalid ward Elizabeth, and their West Indian servant Patti. Also living in the house are the Russian émigré Eugene and his son Leo. Carel's brother repeatedly tries to contact him, but Carel rejects him.

The book focuses on the relationships between these people. At the center of it all is Carel, who believes that God is dead and his angels have been unleashed. And these angels are terrifying.

Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) was born in Dublin, raised in London, and educated at Oxford and Cambridge.

She has written twenty-six novels, as well as works of philosophy and literary criticism.

She was a perfectionist who refused to let editors change her text. Murdoch often used elements of fantasy and Gothic literature in her books, but her heroes were realistic in their attempts to find meaning in extraordinary situations. Many of the writer's books contain religious or philosophical themes, but these are also expressed through the doubts, hesitations, and fates of the characters.
