How would you react if suddenly someone you didn't know brought you documents that would question your origin, that would prove that your previous identity has been false? This is exactly what happens to the protagonist of the novel "Half of a Soul" by the Catalan writer Carme Riera, who, unable to find peace, sets out to trace the past of his parents. His search leads him to the Catalan post-war resistance movement; Paris, where his grandfather lived in exile; to Majorca, where his father was from; to Albert Camus, who may be involved in a mysterious case. These searches go beyond the limits of the novel and force the writer to ask for help from the readers in the hope that someone can tell something about his mother, Cec?lia Balaguer, who went missing in January 1960 in the Spanish-French border town of Portbou.
