"Monkey Beach" is a story about the disintegration and grief of an Indian family, and at the same time, it is also a touching story about the difficulty of growing up. Through the eyes of young Lisa Hill, the world in which modern Indians live, where western culture is intertwined with age-old traditions and beliefs, opens up. Unbelieving her brother's death, Lisa relives their shared past in her mind, in which her colorful family members play an important role: uncle Mick, an ardent Elvis fan and fighter for Indian rights; parents trying to reconcile the heritage of the Haisla people with Western customs; stubborn grandmother Ma-ma-oo, bearer of traditions. Lisa also has to deal with a different world: spirits, sasquatch and animal souls, who try to protect the girl, sometimes to lure her into their own world.
