On a summer day in 1957, nineteen-year-old Lewis Aldridge is standing alone at Waterford railway station. The only one waiting for him back is fifteen-year-old Kit Carmichael. Like the young man, he too has had to spend his childhood in an English village full of angst, whose inhabitants are trying to recover from the horrors of the Second World War. Ten years ago, Lewis was the one waiting for his father to return from the war. His mother, a glamorous socialite and bohemian lashing, holds both husband and son under her spell. But as the world falls apart, the chasm between father and son proves too deep, and their inability to comfort each other in grief pushes them even further apart. Kit and Lewis must build a new future for themselves from the broken scraps of their past lives. "Abandoned" is on the one hand a depressing, on the other hand a beautiful portrait of sin and redemption.
