"Open Sea" (*Avameri*) is the first installment in a series of novels set during the era of the collective farms (*kolkhozes*) in the early 1980s. It was a time when fishermen cast their nets off the distant shores of Africa, aboard vessels that no modern-day sailor could be persuaded to set foot on. It was a time when Moscow dictated catch quotas; when the chairmen of fishing collective farms vied for a share of all-Union resources; and when there was fierce competition for quarterly bonuses, permits to purchase cars, and the coveted "red banners" awarded for socialist labor achievements. It was a time when people sought—by employing various "truths" (and pseudo-truths)—to secure better working and living conditions for the members of their own collective farm. It was a time when the Communist Party stood as the leading force—an authority whose directives were duly heard, only to go in one ear and out the other, while everyone simply carried on with their own affairs. The impetus for writing this novel was the realization that, for the current generation, these years are distant and unfamiliar—a period about which little is known. Yet, this is, in fact, our own recent history.
