This book is unique in English literature. Nothing like it has ever been before, nor has it been since, for the combination of mental qualities from which it was born has become extremely rare in modern times. "The Mountain of Fire" is a hot, visionary fantasy, with a literal, complete, pure innocence that can understand evil and wickedness only in a generalized, poetic form, and desire it as such. This strange mixture is set in a relatively realistic frame, in accordance with the conventions of the time.
The passions in this work glow hotly, wickedly, and destructively, but they are not physical, but symbolically pure. The human types that here irresistibly, on the other side of good and evil, are drawn towards each other or repel each other, are alive, but stylized with a kind of mystical conviction. They are archetypes rather than types, and the forces that energize them are as purely opposing as can be. With its visionary generalization, "Vihurimäe" is one of the most inspired novels in English literature.
