The novel “Jäälätted” (first published in Sweden in 1958) is one of the pinnacles of Bernard Kangro’s work and provides a picture of the university in the 1930s. It is the first book in the writer’s six-part novel series, the so-called Tartu cycle, and has been considered the most poetic depiction of Tartu in Estonian prose. The author undoubtedly also draws on his own memories of his student days, which culminated in a master’s degree in 1938 for his research into the history of the Estonian sonnet.
