Ricardo Paima, the creator of the literary genre known as "tradiciõn", was born and died in Lima. His journey in this world is framed by the dates of February 7, 1833, and October 6, 1919, between which fit eighty-six years of a fruitful and well-lived life.

The future writer was born into a Creole family in the capital, which was quite modest in terms of economic opportunities, and in historical circumstances that largely provide the key to understanding his work. He was born nine years after the Battle of Ayacucho (1824) had shattered Spanish power in South America, and when Lima was still full of the viceroyalty spirit that had left its mark on the city for two and a half centuries. During his years of study and youth, Paima was influenced by an extremely liberal romanticism. It was very fashionable in Peruvian and Latin American literary circles at the time, as it reflected a contemptuous attitude towards against the tyranny represented by classicism.
