“White Death” is the first part of a series about a young criminology investigator named Helgi, who takes over from Hulda Hermannsdottir, who has been forced to retire.
1983
An elderly nurse named Yrsa is found murdered in a former sanatorium in northern Iceland, now a hospital. Hulda Hermannsdottir and her boss, Sverrir, are sent to investigate the death. They find five suspects: the head physician, two junior nurses, a young doctor, and a housekeeper.
A little less than a week after the murder, the head physician is also found dead, apparently having fallen from a balcony. Sverrir concludes that it was a suicide and assumes that the man was also the murderer. The case is closed.
2012
Nearly thirty years later, a young police officer, Helgi Reykdal, who studied criminology in the UK, decides to move back to Iceland, where he is offered a job at the Reykjavik Police Department - the same position from which Hulda Hermannsdóttir is preparing to retire.
The young man is also collecting Golden Age crime novels and writing a research paper about a murder that took place in northern Iceland in 1983. As he dives deeper into the past and starts a new job at the same time, he decides to meet with the original suspects. But the investigator, trying to solve a mystery from years ago, is met with silence and suspicion at every turn.
