"The action of the crime story "The Mystery of the Soldier of the Cross. The Murder Stories of the Baron of Sagadi" takes the reader to 1828 and several manors that remained on the lands of the current Lahemaa National Park. Most of the manor buildings mentioned in the book still exist today.
The criminal line is purely the author's fiction, but the work also includes several events that actually happened in these manors at the time. An attempt has been made to describe the life, atmosphere and buildings of that time in a faithful manner, and the behavior of the characters corresponds to each person's status and position.
On a beautiful May morning, the body of Karula manor owner Justus von Brevern is discovered in the basement of the Oandu cattle farm, although it should instead be a worker who died in a sawmill. The mysterious murder story must be solved by the Sagadi manor owner Paul Aleksander Eduard von Fock, because he is the assessor of the local men's court and owns the Oandu cattle farm. He is helped to investigate the matter by Miss Maria Juliana von Nottbeck, a somewhat unusual-mannered woman from the neighboring Annikvere manor, and Wagner, a university classmate and the manor manager.
