A Russian Soviet writer (1904-1936) with a heroic and tragic biography, his novel, with autobiographical elements, depicts the tempering of the first generation of communist youth during the Civil War and later, when establishing a new order of life in a country devastated by war, shows the striving for self-realization of a strong-willed personality struck by a serious illness. The work has been published in Estonian several times before. The translation has been thoroughly updated for this new edition.
