Robert Louis Stevenson, who became famous as an author of adventure stories, wrote “Treasure Island” and is a classic pirate story that has excited dozens of generations of boys. It has all the hallmarks of this genre: a mysterious map found in a dead sailor’s chest, hidden treasures that noble British gentlemen set out to search for, who in turn are pursued by fearsome pirates flying the black Jolly Roger of pirates, bloody battles on sea and land, narrow escapes from death, and, to top it all, the treasure found and a happy ending.
The book “The Black Arrow” deals with the period in English history when the York and Lancaster dynasties were engaged in a fierce struggle for the English throne. This war has come to be called the War of the Roses after the coats of arms of both families, which depicted roses – the Lancasters had a white rose, the Yorks had a red rose. The War of the Roses lasted for thirty years… (1455–1485). Many nobles during this war constantly went from one camp to another, sometimes on the side of the Yorkists, sometimes on the side of the Lancasters — however it seemed more appropriate at the time. Such landlords are represented in the novel by Sir Daniel Brackley. Such a change of sides caused great confusion throughout the country, which in turn provoked unbridled plunder and arbitrariness. The peasants could not tolerate this for long. In the novel we see one such protest of the peasants and ordinary people — the “Black Arrow” detachment, consisting of outlaws, who try to protect the interests of the lower classes.
