The autobiographical novel “Ulsik, Daughter of Two Choir Directors” looks at a strange period in history through the eyes of a child.
Ulsik is a little girl in the 1960s, whose parents are famous choir directors, and her mother, Ausma Derkēvič, becomes the first female general director of the Latvian National Song Festival. Sometimes Ulsik accompanies her parents to choir rehearsals and concerts, meets many exciting people, but often has to act alone, because her parents “don’t have time.” The lively Ulsik gets into all kinds of adventures and troubles. Her actions are spiced up by the Soviet-era reality, the background of which is tried to be hidden from the child, but the fragments of sentences heard fan the interest even more, and the child’s vivid imagination interprets everything in its own way.
Why doesn't Ulsik meet the cosmonauts, is Ulsik really Ulsik or someone else, why doesn't Ulsik become a piano player or a ski jumper, what does it mean to be sent to polar bears - these are just some of the many questions that you can get an answer to by reading this book. Or you will have to guess it yourself in the end.
